Part of the Berlin Wall
by Nicol A. Kostic (May 28, 2007)
They say I've got too much stuff.
They've said it ever since I can remember.
Wherever I moved,
Wherever I lived,
Most everyone said that.
Except for the other collectors, appraisers or dealers of fine things
Who understand the value of what's unusual
And appreciate rare, one of a kind items.
For that stuff goes beyond
What everyone else has.
Transcending the mediocre you might say,
An eclectic assortment of old odds and ends;
The very reason why museums are created.
Having something to do with age, time, numbers, markings, limited editions.
But you can't tell a person who doesn't understand that what it's all about, since
They only see things that require dusting or junk,
And say "You've got too much stuff",
Without recognizing a Hummel figurine or a blue phoenix pattern.
Clueless about what a thing might be or its origin.
I have a 1969 original Woodstock poster.
Wondering what they might appraise that for
On the Anitques Roadshow.
And yes I've got a real piece of the Berlin Wall,
Which kind of looks like a chunk of rock,
Unless you had lived on the other side of it,
Or was there when they finally brought it down.
